This new tour studies a number of the actions in the area, The Chemin de Dames German attack 27 May 1918 that struck such a savage blow on the resting British Divisions, the Battle of Tardenois where Alexander Godley's XXII Corps (51st Highland and 62nd West Riding Divisions) were fighting with the French 10th Army across the Champagne region in late July 1918 and finally a study of the US Marine Corps actions at Belleau Wood and US Army defence of Chateau Thierry. The small group walking tour is led by Mike Sheil and Clive Harris, set in spectacular country and covering many forgotten actions.

Pick up at Ebbsfleet International or Dover and onwards to our tour Hotel in Reims and stay in the old city set atop a steep sided hill which is crowned with a Vaubon citadel and a beautiful cathedral.

The morning will see us visiting the Chemin des Dames walking along the Plateau de Californie in the footsteps of the 50th Northumbrian Division and review the disastrous events of the Blucher offensive in May 1918. After lunch we study the actions of the 2nd West Yorkshire Regiment, 27 May 1918, will visit the site of the last stand of the Devonshire Regiment at Bois des Buttes before returning to our hotel in Reims

This day will be devoted to the extraordinary events in the Tardennois region where two British regiments won the Croix de Guerre in 1918 in actions which have been all but forgotten by military historians. The morning will follow the 62nd West Riding Division, walking from the start line at Pourcy we advance through the British & German Cemeteries before heading into the Forest of Courmas before ending at the stunning CWGC. After stopping for lunch in the nearby Marfaux we walk in the footsteps of the 19th Western Division actions of 6 June 1918 as they assaulted from Chaumuzy towards Bligny, passing from the Champagne vines we pause at teh Italian Memorial and Cemetery before ending on our objective and the site of their divisional memorial. A late afternoon visit to a local champagne house is planned.

In honour of our American allies this day will be spent examining the role of the AEF at Chateau Thierry and Belleau Wood in June of 1918, driving first to Blanc Mont we look an a spectacular AEF advance to capture this key objective before visiting a nearby German Cemetery containing a stunning wartime memorial. We then visit the imposing US Memorial at Chateau Thierry where we discuss the miracle of the Marne before freetime for lunch in the town. After lunch we walk through Belleau Wood, following the USMC attacks and passing the Iron Mike Memorial, continuing through trenches and discarded field guns we end at the ABMC Cemetery and Memorial before a final visit to the Devil Dog fountain in the village.

Our tour will end with a private visit to one of the most extraordinary sites of the Western Front near Soissons before returning to the UK with a final drop-off point at Ebbsfleet International
