Walking Caporetto

Day 1 - 20 September 2020

Fly to Venice and then transfer to our Kobarid hotel, tour brief contxt lecture on arrival, walk around the town before dinner  
 

Day 2 - 21 September 2020

Today we focus on the Northern Austrian attack by Krauss Corps containing the 3rd, 22nd & 55th Austrian Divisions.
We start the day with a visit to the excellent Kobarid WWI Museum before a short drive to Bovec. Here we take a walk that covers the preserved Austrian defensive positions at Ravelnik outdoors museum. After lunch, we visit Fort Herman, and walk around  partially destroyed Austrian Fort that still contains gun positions and tunnels, we then finish the day at Fort Kluze WWI Museum 
Amber Walks - Total length 8km but over undulating rising ground, some places through tunnels, others exposed to the sun.

DAY 3 - 22 September 2020 

The Central Austrain & German attack is studied that was launched by Stein Corps, made up the 50th Austrain & 12th German Divisions we cover theground between Tomlin to Kobarid
Beginning with the forming up point for Rommels troops in Tomlin we visit the Austro/German front line and nearby German Ossuary, after lunch we walk the Mengore outdoor museum, covered with trenches bunkers and tunnels and set in a perfectly preserved landscape it makes for spectacular end to the day   

 Amber Walks - Total length 6km fairly flat terrain in the morning, a climb (this can be done is short phases) in the afternoon

Day 4 - 23 Sepember 2020


The main German thrust by their Alpine Corps and following Erwin Rommel's route is studied today, starting at the Kolovrat outdoor museum, it takes at least two hours to walk around this Italian fortified position, from the preserved trenches and bunkers we are afforded views over the Adriatic coast. We then coninue our walk up to Mount Jeza, completely undeveloped this Italian fortified postion dominates the surrunding area. We continue with Rommels route into Livek before ending the day at the Italian Ossuary in Kobarid
Amber Walks - 8km in duration, a good climb in the afternoon over rough tracks.

 

Day 5 - 24 September 2020 


Today we head back to Venice via Erwin Rommel's route to the Piave River, set in dramatic scenery we reach Longarone where his Pour le Merite (Blue Max) was awarded via a number of stands before an early evening departure back to London
