16 August 2018

The tour starts with pick ups from Hertfordshire, Ebbsfleet and Dover before onward travel to France via Dover, onroute to our hotel we visit the Vis en Artois Memorial that commemorates all those men missing during the last months of the war. (Overnight in Arras)

17 August 2018 

Today is spent studying the period between March and August 1918, from the German Spring Offensive we follow the story of the Hertfordshire Regiment from their front line positions outside Villers-Faucon and their subsequent retreat in the face of fierce German attacks. Re-crossing the old Somme Battlefields we make our next visit to Fonquevillers where the battalion was effectively wiped out during a gas bombardment in May. Our day ends with a visit the Pozieres Memorial that commemorates the missing from the March retreat before returning to Arras (Overnight in Arras).  

18 August 2018

A full day studying the advance to victory begins with the movements of the Hertfordshire men up to and across the Hindenburg Line with special attention is made to the Victoria Cross action of Frank Young near Havrincourt before visiting the new permanent home for D51 Deborah in Flesquieres. The afternoon is spent studying the action on the Selle River and Sambre Canal before visiting the town of Ghissignies where the Battalion’s final action of the war was fought. (Overnight in Mons). Our final stop of the day takes up to the very location the men of the Herts Guards found themselves at 11am on 11th November 1918.

Our final morning is spent visiting Armistice sites in the city of Mons, focusing on the final actions of the war in this town and with a look back to the very first days of battle, fought over the same ground in 1914. Onward travel to the UK
